In order for people to find your site and increase web site traffic, you need to select the most appropriate keywords that describe your site content or products & services your promoting. I normally jot them down in notepad line by line with what comes to mind when I think about my site. For this site I think of website traffic, increase web site visitors, instant website traffic. You get the picture. After you have your list, try searching for them in Google and see what comes up. If your keywords are too broad you will be getting way too many results and your chances of ranking anywhere near the top few pages is slim to none. Try 3 word combinations which should return less results matching that exact string. Once you find a few descriptive 3 word combination keywords that returns 1 to 5 sites that match those exact words and focus on search engine optimizing a page that is directly related to those keywords. If you can, even name the html file "my_three_keywords.html" or somthing to that effect to get those keywords in your URL. I like to use a few tools available on the internet to help me with my keywords. SEMRush.com is a great tool that lets your see what keywords other sites are using to generate search engine results. Again the idea here is to focus on the less used keyword combinations and optimize for them.

TIP: Your keywords should be in the title of your page, in the first and last paragraph (look at this page), and if you can list them 2-3 times per 100 words. This reinforces your keyword "density" and tells the search engines that your page is relevant to your selected keywords. Don't over do it or they will penalize you for keyword spamming. |
Example: If your site sells XBOX 360 games and you have XBOX or even XBOX 360 as a keyword chances are that your website traffic from search engines will be slim to none unless you are Microsoft or EB Games you are not showing up on the first 25+ pages in Google. The XBOX is probably not a good example as that is very general and widely search. Unless you sell some sort of widget for the XBOX and target XBOX WidgetName you may stand a chance of showing up in the first couple of pages. This is called a "niche" which is a more description term or branch, or variety of the main term XBOX. |
Step 2: Add Content Frequently Repeating Step 1 on All New Pages
Search engines like new fresh content and so do potential customers! Keep the customers engaged with your products and services and the search engines will follow which will increase website traffic. Make sure you use another high ranking keyword combination on your list of keywords from step one and make sure your content on that page follows suit. If you mess up the keyword selection and your page is not optimized for that keyword, the traffic you get from search engine listing will not be targeted to your choice and you will lose customer interest and they will leave. How many times have you searched for something and clicked the link and it wasn't what you expected. Same rule applies, make it mean something and you will keep your website traffic.

TIP: Many sites use blogs or article sections to post relevant content to their sites. This increases your chances of being found due to more keyword options for the search engines to find. It also informs your customers about your products or services and if you choose to do so lets them interact with you. Example: If your site sells pet products, why not add a section for pet care or information regarding your products to better inform your customers as to what they are buying. Studies have shown that customers who are informed buy. Talk about every aspect of your service or product like they were standing in front of you. Chances are that they will buy based on your personal opinion or description of the said item. The purpose of driving website traffic is to convert potential buyers into new customers. Ok now for the part that can cost money if you want instant results or take time and slowly build. In order for your site to really shine you need to show the search engines that you are getting traffic. Believe me it does matter. I have launched many sites in the past with varying results. Through lots of testing and adding content following these steps, step 3 is the most important. Getting your site out there and listed on a ton of sites is what you want. Just make sure when you are posting your links you use descriptive keywords in your titles and descriptions. Link to a page that contains the content that your keywords are found one.
